Defense when attacked by enemies
Psalms 26, 90
"... And the bomb will not break"
(What Elder Father John of Optina told me)
Sergei Alexandrovich Nilus and his wife Elena Alexandrovna came to the Optina Elder Father John (Salov). The elder received us with the joyful caress characteristic of him towards my wife and me.
“Take a stool,” he said, embracing me, “sit next to me.”
What psalms do you read? he asked me a question. I was embarrassed: usually on my short, purely worldly, not even rule, but rule, I did not read any psalms.
- I know, - I answered, - "Alive in help", "Have mercy on me, God" ...
- And what else!
- Yes, I, father, have read all the psalms and, although not by heart, I know everything; but my little rule...
The elder interrupted my self-justification:
- I don’t want to ask you about what your rule is, but about whether you are still reading Psalm 26 - “The Lord is my enlightenment?
- No, father, I do not read.
Well, that's what I'll tell you! You once told me that the enemy is shooting his arrows at you. Do not be afraid! not a single one will touch you, do not be afraid of any rubbish: rubbish will remain rubbish. Just take my advice as a rule, obey: read in the morning and in the evening before your prayer both of these psalms - the 26th and 90th, and in front of them is the great Archangelic joy - "Virgin Mother of God, rejoice." If you do this, neither fire will take you, nor water will drown ...
At these words, the old man got up from his chair, embraced me, and with some special force, resoundingly loudly, did not even say, but shouted:
“I’ll tell you more: it won’t explode with a bomb!” I kissed the old man's hand that was embracing me. And again, pressing close to my very ear, he again exclaimed loudly:
"And the bomb won't explode!* And don't pay any attention to all sorts of rubbish: what can rubbish do to you?.. That's what I wanted to talk to you about." Well, now go with the Lord!
And with these words, the elder let us go in peace.
I knew that person, more precisely, the woman whom the elder hinted at, calling her rubbish: she clung to the Optina beautiful-leaved tree like a lichen, and for a long time with her false holiness and the name of the elders fooled the Optina pilgrims. I understood her, and she took revenge on me wherever she could. God be with her!
"And the bomb will not break! .." The prediction of Fr. John (Salov) was exactly fulfilled during the civil war. According to the memoirs of M.V. Smirnova-Orlova, Elena Alexandrovna told her that once, when she and her husband were driving under fire in a tarantass, a bomb exploded next to them, but they were not hit at all.
Archangel greeting to the Most Holy Theotokos
Virgin Mother of God, rejoice, Blessed Mary, the Lord is with you; Blessed are you in women and blessed is the fruit of your womb, as if the Savior gave birth to our souls.
Psalm 26
(speaking of the steadfastness of the believer in persecution and the consolation of his patronage of the Lord)
The Lord is my light and my Savior, whom shall I fear? Lord Protector of my life, of whom shall I be afraid? Every now and then approach me angry, hedgehog to demolish my flesh, insulting me and defeat mine, tyi exhausted and fallen. If a regiment takes up arms against me, my heart will not be afraid; if he rises up against me, I trust in Him. I asked the Lord alone, then I will seek: if we live in the house of the Lord all the days of my belly, see the beauty of the Lord and visit His holy temple. As if hiding me in Your village on the day of my evils, covering me in the mystery of Your village, exalt me to a stone. And now, lo, lift up my head against my enemies: I have lived and devoured in His village a sacrifice of praise and exclamation; I will sing and sing to the Lord. Hear, O Lord, my voice, whom I called, have mercy on me and hear me. My heart speaks to you: I will seek the Lord; I will seek your face; I will seek your face, O Lord. Do not turn Your face away from me and do not turn away with anger from Your servant: be my helper, do not reject me and do not leave me. God, my Savior. Like my father and my mother will leave me. The Lord will accept me. Set me a law, O Lord, in Your way, and guide me in the right path for my enemies' sake. Do not betray me into the souls of those who are tormented by me: as if you stood up on me as a witness of iniquity, and lie to yourself. I believe to see the good of the Lord in the land of the living. Be patient with the Lord, be of good cheer, and let your heart be strong, and be patient with the Lord.
Psalm 90
1 Alive in the help of the Most High, in the blood of the God of Heaven will settle down. 2 He says to the Lord: Thou art my protector and my refuge. My God, and I trust in Him. 3 Yako He will deliver thee from the snares of the hunter, and from the word of the rebellious, 4 His pleshma will overshadow thee, and under His wings you hope: His truth will bypass you with a weapon. 5 Do not be afraid of the fear of the night, from the arrow flying in the days, 6 from the thing in the darkness of the transient, from the scum, and the demon of the noonday. 7 A thousand will fall from your country, and darkness at your right hand, but it will not come near you, 8 both look at your eyes, and see the reward of sinners. 9 For thou, O Lord, is my hope; thou hast made thy refuge the Most High. 10 Evil will not come to you, and the wound will not come near your body, 11 as if by an angel of his command about you, keep you in all your ways. 12 They will take you in their hands, but not when you stomp your foot on a stone, 13 step on the asp and the basilisk, and cross the lion and the serpent. 14 For I have trusted in Me, and I will deliver, and I will cover it, because I know My name. 15 He will call to me, and I will hear him: I am with him in trouble, I will crush him, and I will glorify him; 16 with length of days I will fulfill him, and I will show him my salvation.

Psalm - protection from enemies, for every Orthodox person is a very important element of a righteous life. After all, for every Christian, turning to the Almighty is of great importance. The reading of psalms has much more power and efficiency than a simple prayer appeal, which at the same time serves as a reliable protection against the negative effects of the environment, such as envy and anger.
Life is so arranged that no matter how ideal human behavior would be, it would still have enemies. This may be for various reasons. Indeed, despite the fact that envy and anger are considered a sin, nevertheless, in some people these feelings very often manifest themselves. They are the basis that makes an enemy out of a friend.
The experience of people in protecting with psalms is quite large. It originates from ancient times. As can be seen from church history, holy texts really help every person who believes in miracles to provide reliable protection from the negativity of other people. In the modern world, there are a fairly large number of different prayers from evil spirits and evil enemies. They all begin and end with the Lord's Prayer.
Despite the large variety, most often Christians, in order to protect themselves from enemies, sorcerers and corruption, read a protective psalm from enemies for complete elimination. He helps:
- Cleanse your soul from negativity.
- Provide protection from evil.
- Protect yourself and your loved ones from the effects of magical power.
In order for it to be effective, it must be read correctly.
What psalm to read for protection from enemies
There are several psalms that are customary to read from enemies. The most common are 90 and 26. They have a special power.
90 psalm
This text is rather cryptic. In the Orthodox religion there is no similar prayer to him. He is in demand by believers. For beginners, it will resemble a kind of ancient conspiracy. In fact, this is far from the case. If you sincerely pronounce the words from the text and do not think about them, then its true meaning will be revealed.
Moreover, it is necessary to pronounce it not in the most difficult life situations, but daily. Preferably at the same time. To better understand the essence of the psalm, you need to read it several times in a row. It should be used in the most dangerous situations. But in order to avoid such a danger, it must be read regularly. Psalm 90 for protection from enemies was written by King David.
He wrote this test at a time when there was an epidemic of pestilence. According to the holy historical writings, unlike all places, in the city where David was king, the epidemic lasted only three days. It was God's grace. In gratitude for this, the text of the psalm was written. The main essence of this text is gratitude for saving the population from a terrible scourge that took the lives of hundreds of people. The text of this psalm is an inseparable part of the gospel.
It is mentioned when the devil tempted the Savior. The essence of the holy petition is manifested in the fact that it says that nothing threatens a believing person if he sincerely believes in the Lord God and all the saints. If a believer does not have the opportunity to read a psalm daily, then for the convenience of a modern person there is an audio recording of the holy letter, which can be listened to at any convenient time.
26 psalm
The text of this holy letter in Russian is very often used by believers. For many centuries, it is considered to be the most powerful prayers from the manifestation of various types of evil. It serves as a sure defense against any kind of danger that can hang over a person. This text, as well as Psalm 90, was written by King David. It was produced before the prophet anointed the king to be king.
An interesting story is associated with this psalm. Once a famous old man was visited by a scientist. From him he received a blessing for the obligatory reading of three psalms: 90, 26 and 50. The clergyman (elder) placed special emphasis on text 26. At the same time, he said that if the reading is regular, then nothing terrible threatens the scientist, and he will be able to successfully continue his work and he will not be afraid of any bombing.
At first, the scientist could not understand what they were talking about. It wasn't long before the war started. During World War II, the scientist and his wife were bombed. Despite the fact that the shells exploded in the most dangerous proximity, the spouses were not injured at all. Thanks to such stories, the text of the holy letter has become very popular. Protective prayer from enemies is very strong - Psalm 26 is used to this day by believers as a reliable protection against all evil.
Here is her text:
The Lord is my light and my Savior, whom shall I fear? Lord Protector of my life, of whom shall I be afraid? Every now and then approach me angry, hedgehog to demolish my flesh, insulting me and defeat mine, tyi exhausted and fallen. If a regiment takes up arms against me, my heart will not be afraid; if he rises up against me, I trust in Him. I believe to see the good of the Lord in the land of the living. Be patient with the Lord, be of good cheer, and let your heart be strong, and be patient with the Lord.
Before you start reading the holy texts, it will not be superfluous to visit the temple to go through the sacraments of confession and communion, which will ensure proper preparation for prayer appeals.
God bless you!
In this video you will hear the singing of the 26th text of the Psalter:
Psalm 26 - why is it so famous and why read it? When else are the Psalms of David read? We will try to answer these and other questions in this article.
What is a Psalm
A psalm is a poetic work, but it is not by chance that the book of Psalms has become part of church worship. This is not just poetry, but prayerful poetry. There are 150 original Psalms, the most famous of which are Psalm 26, Psalm 50 and Psalm 90. We will talk about why they are most often read by Orthodox Christians. The morning and evening services of the Church developed precisely around the reading of the Psalms. There are so-called "morning" and "evening" Psalms, laudatory and pleading. Their subject matter is different, as they were written in different settings. For example, the repentant Psalm 50 King David wrote, lamenting his sins. This Psalm is very popular, because the feeling of regret for one's own transgressions always torments the human soul. Especially if they are unrepentant sins.
A psalm is an appeal to the Lord. Despite the fact that Psalm 26, like other Psalms, was written by a human hand, from the pages of the Psalter it is as if Christ himself speaks to us. These texts are imbued with the author's ardent desire to speak with God, ask Him for protection, praise Him and give thanks. Rhyme was not present in the original texts of the Psalm, but their structure was still different from other books of Holy Scripture. Athanasius of Alexandria said that the chanting of the Psalms heals the sin-stricken soul of a person, and Ephraim the Syrian said that the Psalms make a person an interlocutor of God.
That is why the reading of Psalm 26 and other Psalms should not be approached formally. Each word of the Psalm must be felt and understood by a person. There is also an interpretation of the Psalms, which will help to cope with emerging issues. They can also be asked to your confessor. But most of the Psalms are intuitive to a person and close to everyone, because the problems, requests and feelings described in them have been experienced by many. This is especially true of Psalm 26, which praises God, expressing admiration and love for the Heavenly Father.
When to read Psalm 26
Why read the Psalms? The benefits of psalmody and psalm reading for an Orthodox Christian are undeniable. The Psalter is read constantly. This is the only book of the Old Testament that has completely and completely become a part of Orthodox worship. The voice of Christ is felt in the Psalter; it is not for nothing that Jesus left us a covenant to study the Scriptures. In addition, the Psalms are written and composed in such a way that it seems to the person reading them that he himself wrote them. This is an amazing property of the psalms, which is noted by everyone who reads them. Who is close to Psalm 26? Psalms 26, 50 and 90 are most often of interest to Orthodox Christians. They reflect issues that concern almost every believer.
Psalm 50 is read when a person's soul suffers from unrepentant sins, and Psalm 90 is needed for those who are in a difficult situation and ask for special protection from the Lord. Psalm 26 glorifies the Creator, this is a thankful Psalm, which is easy to understand and understand even for a person who has recently come to the Church. “The Lord is the Defender of my life, from whom shall I be afraid?” says the text of the Psalm. Indeed, whom should a person be afraid of if the Eternal and Almighty Lord stands up for his protection. It is this Psalm that reflects sincere love for God, trust in His will. It also contains a request for pardon, for condescension to human weakness, a plea for help and intercession in the face of evil.
Reading Psalm 26, we absorb the spiritual experience of the author of the Psalm - King David. His appeal to the Lord is a powerful spiritual work that resonates in the heart of every Christian.
Psalm 26. Text
The Lord is my light and my Savior, whom shall I fear? Lord Protector of my life, of whom shall I be afraid? And now, lift up my head, against my enemies: I have lived and devoured in His village the sacrifice of praise and exclamation, I will sing and sing to the Lord.
Hear, O Lord, my voice, which I called out: have mercy on me and hear me. My heart speaks to you, I will seek the Lord. I will seek thee my face, Thy face, O Lord, I will seek. Human life is unpredictable. Because no one is given to know what exactly is prepared by Fate. Moreover, trying to find out about the future is also impossible. Because such action is sinful. But due to the fact that a person cannot find out in any way about the events that will happen in his life, he begins to experience fear. This fear often gives rise to doubts.
But most of all Orthodox Christians are afraid of death. And only the righteous believe that there is no need to be afraid of death. After all, after the death of a person, his soul goes to the kingdom of heaven. That is, it returns to where it should be. And so the priests also insist that the fear of death is completely unfounded.
It's just that sometimes it's very difficult to deal with it. Of course, one can say that a Christian must be strong in spirit. But where to draw this power, many cannot understand. And this is the root of the problem. To understand this, it is necessary to recall the existence of so-called protective prayers. Unfortunately, many have forgotten about them. But it is with the help of these texts that one can protect oneself from all evil.
Psalm 26
To protect themselves, many people acquire weapons, various amulets, and set up guards in the house. All this, from the point of view of the priests, is not effective. It must be remembered that everything in this world happens solely by the will of the Almighty. Therefore, such primitive methods of defense cannot at all protect a Christian. Especially when it comes to the use of all kinds of amulets.
In recent years, such attributes have become very popular. And this negative trend greatly worries representatives of the clergy. After all, they are well aware that this is fraught with negative consequences. If you recall the history, then many used to worship idols. These false gods have long been considered true. It is for this reason that those times were dark. Because the worship of idols involved sacrifices. For Orthodox Christianity, this is completely unacceptable.
Therefore, if a Christian begins to use amulets, then he literally recognizes himself as a heretic. As you know, for those who do not believe in the true Lord, there is a separate cauldron in hell. For this reason, the clergy and experience anxiety. They strongly recommend using ordinary prayer instead of amulets. In this case, the most suitable is a protective prayer or psalms 26 and 90.
- a psalm is read before the feast of the Epiphany;
- they sing a prayer service during the tonsure, after which Christians can put on a cassock and take a rosary in their hands.
In addition, it is impossible not to note the fact that the psalm is actively used in Judaism, as well as in Catholic worship. This is proved by the fact that the psalm is indeed widely known. However, despite this, some people still do not fully realize that divine texts are not just some kind of spell, after reading which, a person gets what he wants. Prayer is a sacrament that must be treated with special respect.
History of appearance
It is noteworthy that the author of this psalm is the king. It was written in those years when life in the state was very turbulent. Moreover, the threat of death even hung over the monarch. When David became aware of the impending conspiracy, he realized that he was left completely defenseless. Since at that time almost all the allies turned their backs on him. Those who still supported him did not have the power to protect the ruler. The only person the monarch could hope for in such a situation was the Lord. Only his mercy could save David from death. And the king understood this. That is why he began to frantically pray and ask the Almighty for protection. Ultimately, heaven answered that prayer.
Following the example of the monarch, many began to use the psalm he wrote to protect themselves from evil. It is believed that this prayer can be read at the moment when:
- a threat looms over a person - if a Christian feels that there is a danger to his life or health, he can read a prayer to beg for protection from heaven;
- the soul begins to experience temptation - it is no secret to anyone that the devil sends temptations to people. Of course, it is quite difficult to resist them. But, armed with prayer, it will be much easier to do this;
- enemies begin to act - the greatest danger often comes from enemies who have set their sights on a righteous Christian and want to do everything to destroy him. Psalm 26 will help protect you from them.
Please note that priests recommend reading this prayer with a large number of repetitions. The best option is 40 repetitions of the text.
Psalm 50
The author of this psalm is also. But if the previous prayer, which was mentioned in the article above, was written by David the righteous, then this one has a completely different story. The fact is that the king wrote this psalm after he fully realized the gravity of the sin he had committed.
There is a mention in history that the king committed adultery. The woman he liked so much that he took her into his harem turned out to be married. But this circumstance did not stop the monarch. He committed a sin, as a result of which the girl became pregnant. When it turned out that she was the wife of a famous commander, the king decided to hide his guilt. It is believed that it was on his orders that the unfortunate husband of the beauty was killed. And although the sin was hidden from the human race, the heavens were angry. They showed their wrath to the unfortunate king. The children of David began to kill each other in the struggle for the throne, and the peace in the country suddenly turned into a war. In order to beg forgiveness from the Lord for the committed sin, he repented. During his repentance, he used Psalm 50, which he wrote with his own hand.
The clergy strongly recommend reading this prayer every day. Because some people may not even notice how they sin. Moreover, we should not forget that it is extremely important for a righteous Christian to pray not only for himself, but also for other people. If we turn to history, it becomes clear that the Lord has always been tolerant of sinners. This is confirmed by the story of King David. Because for his sins, he could well pay with his life. However, due to the fact that this sinner was able to find spiritual strength for sincere repentance, he was pardoned.
Psalm 90
This prayer was written by David during difficult times. It should be noted right away that the kingdom he ruled lived quite a bit in the world. However, it is still impossible to deny the fact that David still had peaceful days. On such days he preferred to praise the Lord. However, once such a rare calm day turned into a real nightmare for him.
The reason for this was a serious illness, which the ruler suddenly caught. The doctors who arrived at the palace at the first call informed the monarch and members of his family that he had caught a pestilence. This disease was extremely dangerous because it could take the life of a person. Moreover, during the fever, the patient experienced terrible agony.
With all their might, the worldly healers tried to help David. They were looking for a way to rid him of his illness. However, their efforts were not crowned with success. Every day the ruler became weaker and weaker. Soon he became so weak that he could not even get out of bed. Then in the palace they began to whisper that the king would soon die. But this did not happen. One day he got out of bed, and the astonished doctors saw that he was completely cured. As it turned out later, every day the king regularly read a prayer.
He realized that his only hope was the Lord. That is why he began to selflessly pray in order to beg heaven for help. And the heavens did not remain deaf to his prayer.
How to read the psalms correctly?
This question is asked by many believers. But the answer is pretty simple. The church insists that the psalms be read in the same way as other prayers. Firstly, a person must be alone, unless it is a question of reading a prayer in a temple. Secondly, his thoughts must be pure. Thirdly, it is important to tune in correctly and try to completely get rid of negative emotions.
When reading a prayer, a person should be completely calm. Every word of the prayer must be felt. It is extremely important that a Christian understands the meaning of prayer. If something remains incomprehensible, then it is imperative to ask for clarification from the spiritual mentor.
Conclusion
- The author of Psalms 26, 50, and is the king.
- All of them were written in different periods of the ruler's life.
- Psalm 26 is used as a powerful defense against all evil.
- The clergy insist that each of these psalms must be read daily.
The life of a modern person is always full of dangers that do not escape even Orthodox Christians. For protection from a variety of troubles and misfortunes, the Lord God, by His grace, has given us many ways. This is a pectoral cross, which an Orthodox person never takes off under any circumstances, this is holy water, and prosphora, and the sign of the cross. But the most important weapon of the believer against any forces of evil has always been and will be prayer. A sincere appeal to God, coming from the very heart and combined with pure faith, can literally work miracles, which has a lot of documentary evidence. How should one pray for protection from evil? There are many texts, one of which is Psalm 26.
What is a psalm and in what cases can it be read?
Psalm in Greek means "praise". This is a special kind of chant that came to us from the Old Testament. These texts were written by King David, and their collection was included in the Old Testament under the name of the book of Psalms.
King David
With the translation of the Psalter from Hebrew into Greek, the psalms began to be actively used in Christian liturgical practice. To this day, these ancient texts are often read in church services. Also, many Christians read the Psalter at home, as part of their prayer rule or in some particular life circumstances.
Since there are many chants, a certain practice of reading certain texts in certain life circumstances has developed. So, Psalm 26 is usually read to protect against evil forces. In any danger, you can resort to this strong spiritual help, namely:
- life threatening;
- a threat to health;
- attacks of evil spirits and unclean forces;
- malice or anger emanating from enemies.
How else to pray for protection from evil:
Many Orthodox elders spoke about the great protective power of these texts in any trouble. So, Ambrose of Optina, in one of his letters to his spiritual son, who participated in hostilities, strongly recommended reading Psalm 26 with the belief that no bullet would hit the reader.
Ambrose Optinsky
In addition, there are testimonies of many believing Christians who have experienced the power of prayer. As you know, in war, many people discover God for themselves, because they constantly see death and themselves can die at any moment.
Interesting: reading protective prayers saved the lives of many people who, with sincere faith, turned to the Lord and asked for his protection.
Many may wonder what the words "before the anointing" mean in the title of the text. This designation indicates that the text was written by David before he was anointed king. This anointing was performed by the prophet Samuel, according to the ancient tradition of those days. The very words of prayer are quite simple to understand and say that the Lord God will not leave without his protection and help not a single person who comes to him with a pure heart and sincere faith.
How to read Psalm 26 to David
As for the external form of reading, it involves the breakdown of the text into its component parts, between which a glorification of God is read, as well as prayers for the health of relatives and friends. Despite the fact that the book of Psalms is included in the Bible, for prayer reading it is better to take the text from a special prayer book. There it will already be broken down into all the necessary parts, and it will be clear to the praying one in which place one or another text should be read.
Opening of the Psalter
When starting to read a song of praise for protection from evil forces, one should not forget that in Orthodoxy there is no magic or any purely external protective rites. It is absolutely useless and even soul-damaging to read such prayers only for the purpose of formal defense. Moreover, some impious people may try to somehow take revenge on their enemies with the help of such texts, “return” the evil done to them, or harm them in some other way. Such actions are completely unacceptable from the point of view of Orthodoxy, since the Christian faith presupposes love and mercy even towards enemies. If suddenly, out of ignorance, one of the new Christians tried such practices, such a person must definitely repent of what he has done, go to confession to a priest or confessor.
There is no difference in the strength of prayer, it's just that new beginning Christians often find it difficult and incomprehensible to the ancient language that is used in temples. In such cases, you can take a prayer book in Russian and read from there. Much more important is the understanding of what is being read, and the inner involvement of the person praying in the process, rather than the external formal reading in one language or another.
About other psalms of David:
Perhaps the most important rule that is worth remembering when reading any prayers is that it is not the text itself that protects from evil forces. Psalms should not be treated as conspiracies or magic spells that must be correctly subtracted for the desired effect. Only the Lord God helps people, and any prayer is communication with Him and an appeal to Him. That is why it is pointless to read anything without a sincere desire to change your life and build it according to Christian doctrine.
